SAN DIEGO, CA · EV CHARGING
Commercial EV charging installation in San Diego.
Flux installs Level 2 and DC fast charging for San Diego commercial parking lots, garages, and fleet yards, with the service work, trenching, permits, and start-up testing included.
Chargers that show up on time.
The hard part of EV charging installation isn't the charger, it's the power: service capacity, panel upgrades, trenching, and utility make-ready programs that can cover a surprising share of the cost. Good designs start from your electrical reality, not a brochure.
Good fleet charging plans start from routes and dwell times so vehicles are charged when they roll, and workplace charging gets managed loads so your demand charges don't eat the benefit. Broken chargers kill adoption, so service is part of every proposal.

Who installs EV chargers for San Diego commercial parking lots?
Commercial EV charging installation in San Diego puts Level 2 or DC fast charging into a parking lot, garage, or fleet yard, along with the panel work, trenching, and permits behind it. We size the system around two numbers: how many vehicles plug in at once, and how many hours each one can sit.
Power and paperwork set the schedule, not the chargers. SDG&E takes service upgrade applications from business customers and prices business plans on both total energy use and peak demand. The City of San Diego Development Services runs the building, grading, and right-of-way permits. We check both before we quote.
How does charger power change your SDG&E bill?
Settle the power tier before you pick hardware. SDG&E publishes business pricing plans and a separate page on maximum use, or demand, which is how hard your site pulls at its peak. Dual-gun DC fast stations run 120 kW to 240 kW and split that power between the two guns as vehicles arrive. Overnight parking often runs fine on Level 2 spread across more stalls. We pull twelve months of your usage, price both options, and set dynamic load management, the software that caps total charging draw, so the stalls fit the service you already have.
Power and permits
What does EV charger installation in San Diego need before work starts?
Utility service capacity
UTILITY
SDG&E accepts service upgrade applications from business customers through its builder services page. We read the panel schedule and meter data first, then file early, because utility work usually paces the whole job.
Drawings the City will accept
PERMIT
The City's Development Services department publishes a Project Submittal Manual that sets what a submittal package holds. We draw the one-line diagram, load calculations, and stall layout to that manual so the plan check does not bounce.
Conduit that leaves your property
SITE
Development Services issues grading and right-of-way permits separately from the building permit. We map the trench route from the switchgear to the stalls, and if it crosses a sidewalk or driveway apron, we file for that permit alongside the electrical one.
The record you keep
RECORDS
Approved City permit records live in OpenDSD, the department's online records system. At handover we give you stamped drawings, inspection sign-offs, and equipment cut sheets in one file, so a future tenant or lender is not chasing paper.

PROJECT PLANNING
Who keeps San Diego EV charging stations running after install?
Start-up testing
STARTUP
Commissioning is the load testing done before handover. We charge a real vehicle at each gun, confirm the network and payment connection, and log what every stall delivered.
Power split verification
TESTING
A dual-gun cabinet shares one power supply between two vehicles. We plug in two at once, record the output at each gun, and hand you that sheet so the delivered rate is not a guess.
Fault response
SERVICE
We track faults by station, set the response window in your agreement, and send an electrician who already has your one-line diagram instead of a dispatcher reading a ticket.
Software and billing handover
HANDOVER
We turn over admin logins for the station network, session reports, and the driver pricing setup, so your team can change rates or pull usage without calling us.

Sizing inputs
How do you size EV charging for a San Diego commercial site?
- Count the vehicles charging at the same time and the hours each one is parked. Long dwell means lower power per stall; short dwell means fewer, stronger stalls.
- Name the plug standard. Commercial hardware ships in CCS and NACS versions, among others, so we confirm which connectors your vehicles and visiting fleets use before anything is ordered.
- Check battery voltage across your fleet. Commercial and passenger models are moving from 400-volt systems to 800-volt platforms built for ultra-fast charging, and that changes which cabinet is worth buying.
- Decide the stall count you want in three years, not just this year. We set conduit, pull boxes, and panel space for the larger number while you fund the smaller one.
- Get uptime and warranty terms in writing, and name who answers when a charger goes down. Total cost of ownership and uptime are the two numbers that decide a commercial charger, more than the sticker price.

BEFORE YOU BUY
Which San Diego commercial properties use EV charging stalls?
- Retail plazas with high stall turnover: drivers stay 20 to 45 minutes, so the fast-charging tier earns its cost and the stalls need signage and a time limit.
- Fleet depots that park overnight: vehicles sit long enough for Level 2, so we spread lower-power stalls across the yard and stagger start times through load management.
- Hospitality and destination sites: drivers leave a car for hours, so we place stalls on the walking path between the lot and the entrance and light them for night arrivals.
- Corridor stops off a highway: heavy vehicles and sedans both pull in, so we check turning clearance, pull-through depth, and cable reach for the longest vehicle you expect.
- Government and municipal fleets buying on a written bid: we supply load calculations, equipment cut sheets, and a scope document your procurement team can put out to bid.

Common questions about commercial ev charging installation in San Diego
Do I need a permit to install an EV charger in California?
PERMITS
Plan on one for commercial electrical work. The City of San Diego Development Services issues building, grading, and right-of-way permits and publishes a Project Submittal Manual. We file the drawings and carry the inspections.
Is there a rebate available for EV chargers in San Diego?
INCENTIVES
SDG&E lists business incentive, demand response, and energy efficiency programs for business customers. We check current terms against your site and never build an unconfirmed incentive into the quoted price.

QUESTIONS
Straight answers.
How long does EV charging permitting take at the City?
We don't quote a fixed number. The City's Development Services department has been moving legacy building and engineering permits off its old PTS system, and online payments for those legacy permits ended, so we confirm the current filing path before we set install dates.
Can we start with two chargers and add more later?
Yes, and the underground work is where you save. We trench, set conduit, and reserve panel space for the full stall count you expect, then install and energize only the chargers you fund now. The next phase reuses the same trench.
Will one charger work for our vans and our staff cars?
Usually, if the plug and voltage line up. Commercial cabinets serve pass-through sedans and heavier vehicles, but 400-volt and 800-volt vehicles charge differently, so we confirm your mix and the connector standard before selecting hardware.
Should we install chargers while the parking lot is already being repaved?
That is the cheapest window you'll get. Open pavement means one trench instead of two. Give us the paving schedule and we set conduit, pull boxes, and stall stubs before the lot closes back up, then land the chargers after.
