BATTERY ENERGY STORAGE
Commercial battery storage incentives.
Tax credits and programs that cover a real share of storage projects, screened and filed as part of the job.
THE STACK
The battery incentive stack
Commercial battery storage incentives can cover a large share of a project when they stack. The federal investment tax credit returns 30 percent of qualifying cost - and standalone storage qualifies, no solar attached. Accelerated depreciation adds a second federal layer. State programs and utility offers stack on top where they exist.
Combined, the layers commonly recover half or more of system cost within the first several years. The catch is process: credits have in-service and construction-start rules, state programs have queues and budgets, and every layer has paperwork that rewards filing early.
BY STATE
Find your state's battery incentives
Battery money is state-by-state. Pick yours and go straight to what pays there.
FEDERAL
Federal tax credit for battery storage
The ITC returns 30 percent of qualifying project cost as a tax credit, with adders possible in some locations. Then depreciation does the quiet heavy lifting: 100 percent first-year bonus depreciation - made permanent in 2025 - writes off the system's depreciable basis in year one for profitable businesses.
Together the two federal layers can recover a large share of cost in the early years. One 2025-law reality: storage kept its credit while others lost theirs, but construction-start timing rules and foreign-content restrictions on equipment now apply - both are handled in design, not at filing.
STATE AND UTILITY
State and utility battery storage programs
Some states run storage rebate programs with budgets that fill on a first-come basis; some utilities pay for dispatchable capacity through standing programs.
Availability is regional and shifts year to year. The move that never changes: check what is open for your address before designing, because program rules shape eligible equipment and sizing.
IN PRACTICE
Battery incentive deadlines to know
Every layer of the stack has a clock - credit rules change, program budgets run out, queues close. Projects that capture the full stack share one habit: they file before they build. See how the numbers land in battery storage cost, and what the installation timeline looks like.

State programs, page by page
The two deepest state programs have their own guides: California's SGIP battery rebate and NYSERDA's battery incentives in New York.

QUESTIONS
Straight answers.
Does the 30% credit require solar?
No. Standalone battery storage qualifies for the federal ITC on its own. Pairing with solar is optional, not required.
How much of a project can incentives cover?
Stacking the ITC, depreciation, and available state or utility programs commonly recovers half or more of cost within the first several years.
Why does filing order matter?
Credits have construction-start and in-service rules; state budgets fill in order. Filing before building is the difference between funded and unfunded.
Are incentives the same everywhere?
Federal layers travel; state and utility layers are local and change annually. Checking your address's open programs is step one of any battery project.
