BATTERY ENERGY STORAGE

Demand charge reduction.

The bill inside your bill, and how batteries shave the peaks that create it.

THE BILL

What demand charges are and why they hurt

Your commercial power bill has two meters running. One counts how much energy you use. The other - the demand charge - watches how fast you use it, and it can be 30 to 70 percent of the whole bill.

Here is the mechanism: the utility reads your power draw every 15 minutes. The single highest reading of the month sets the demand fee for the entire month. It works like a highway toll priced on your fastest moment of speeding. Hit the peak once, pay for it thirty days. That is why cutting total usage alone barely moves the bill: the peak is the price.

PEAK SHAVING

How battery peak shaving works

A battery watches your building's draw in real time. When it climbs toward a new monthly peak - compressors and HVAC landing at once - the battery discharges and serves part of the load itself. The meter never sees the spike.

The battery then recharges quietly when demand is low. Software does all of it. Nobody in the building notices anything except the bill.

THE MATH

Is your building a fit for peak shaving

Twelve months of bills tell the story. The sharper and shorter your peaks, the more a battery earns: a building whose peak lasts minutes is the perfect case, because a modest battery can carry a brief spike.

Flat, around-the-clock load earns less. This is why honest battery quotes start with your interval data, not with hardware.

IN PRACTICE

How to spot demand charges on your bill

Find the line item on your bill priced in kilowatts (kW), not kilowatt-hours (kWh). Multiply it by twelve. That's roughly what your peaks cost per year - and the number a battery goes to work on. See how the savings stack in battery storage cost and what installation involves.

QUESTIONS

Straight answers.

How big are demand charges really?

Commonly 30 to 70 percent of a commercial power bill. Many owners have never had the line explained, which is why the savings surprise people.

Why doesn't using less energy fix it?

The fee prices your single fastest 15-minute draw, not your total. A building can cut usage 20 percent and keep the same peak - and the same fee.

How much can a battery cut the peak?

It depends on how sharp your peaks are. Short, spiky peaks can drop substantially with a modest battery; long flat plateaus need more capacity.

Does peak shaving disrupt the building?

No. The battery discharges behind the meter while everything runs normally. The only visible change is the bill.
